“The best partnerships aren’t dependent on a more common goal but on a shared path of equality, desire, and no small amount of passion.”

Our Story

Began in 2015, when we met through an exchange program at Stenebyskolan Art, Design, Material, and Craftsmanship School in Sweden, hosted by the University of Gothenburg.

What started as a friendly rivalry soon developed into a source of inspiration, pushing us to expand the boundaries of our individual practices.

From the beginning, it was clear that our mutual drive for learning and passion for our crafts were the kindling of a unique partnership.

Alexis Knipping

FOUNDER, FABRICATOR & DESIGNER

I am a passionate designer and fabricator with a deep affinity for natural materials. My creative journey is a blend of artistry and craftsmanship, where I transform natural materials into objects or spaces that resonate with purpose and beauty.

Guided by a profound belief that good design enhances the human experience, I craft each piece with meticulous attention to detail, infusing a sense of connection into every creation.

Whether it's a handcrafted piece of furniture, an inviting interior space, or an outdoor oasis, my work is a testament to the symbiosis between nature's gifts and human ingenuity. My goal is to amplify the richness of life's moments through my work and creations.

Joachim Wessmark

FOUNDER, ARTIFICER & ARTIST

As makers, it is our job to comprehend the fingerprints we leave, whether from a tool, a material, or a technique. Context is as important as everything. Any art, object, or space is read and experienced as a whole. Even the aspects that escape conscious attention impact us, which is why every detail, even the most minute, matters.

My work fundamentally stems from the idea that art exists when someone interacts with it, and by exploring what shape that interaction could take.

My passion for this form of storytelling continues to evolve. Each creation I design serves as an invitation to actively partake in that narrative, as my pieces only really exist in the presence of people.

Through integrating technology and artistic sensibility, I strive to create spaces and objects that captivate both mind and body to leave a lasting impression, inviting all to explore the possibilities of art in motion. It is from this perspective that I create anything and everything.

As fate would have it, in 2022, we had the opportunity to attend an Artist Residency Week, “Lu’um Creativo,” an initiative aimed at bringing together a diverse group of artists to reside, create, and leave their artwork at Kaaba Luum, a newly opened Hotel in Tulum, Mexico.

Recognizing the opportunity to combine our talents, we decided to take on the project together. Thus, Studio Kotte
was born, rooted in a shared ambition to explore what we could achieve as a team.

Working Together

Lu’um Creativo was truly a unique and enchanting experience for all of us. We built lasting connections with all of the participating artists, collaborating closely, sharing in our creativity, offering support, and cohabiting in the heart of the jungle.

This is also where we developed a profound bond with Ayesha Taylor (Partner of Studio Kotte) and the entire WYDS Media & Events Production Team.
